I work on site and seldom return for a second touch on any painting. It is a struggle against the receding light and the weather and the bugs and the wind - and a joy for the same reasons.

These are small scale recent paintings - done 'premier coup' on site. I guess they are about the same thing all my work is - searching in order to discover some small bit of clarity and form amongst the whirlwind chaos of the visual world. Embracing the impossible task of compressing time and energy into a single moment has always fascinated me - keeping foremost in mind that "mystery is significant" (e.e.cummings).

I've been showing my work since the early 1970s. These are samplings from those years and some of the dates are a well thought out guess - you may discern a progression of style or approach but actually, every time out I seem to have to re-learn the whole thing over again. Yet, there are certain artist's paintings or even a body of work that stay with me as if I am perpetually standing in front of them.
